About the Historic Five SeaSuns Bed and Breakfast

This historic Washington State home was built in 1926 by attorney, Thomas F. Trumbull, as a showcase in a new era of construction. The Dutch Colonial design provided for more open stairways and plentiful windows allowing natural lighting throughout the home. It was one of the first homes in Port Angeles to boast of having two full bathrooms upstairs.

The pergola on the south side of the home was a part of the original construction and provided the perfect spot for Mrs. Trumbull to entertain the society ladies of Port Angeles for afternoon tea. You can still enjoy a cup of tea and one of Caroline’s pastries or cookies under the pergola today while relaxing in the gardens and enjoying the waterfall and ponds.

Mr. Trumbull came to the Olympic Peninsula to work with the timber and railroad industries in the expansion of the railroad to the west end of the peninsula to meet the demand for timber in the war effort. A part of that railroad bed still exists on the north side of Lake Crescent, known as the Spruce Railroad Trail.

He later became a circuit judge, and we were told that he was always uncomfortable owning the home, feeling that it was too ostentatious for his position in the community since the home was completed shortly before the Great Depression. The home sold in the mid-40’s to the Smith family who owned the “Soda Pop Factory” and the ice plant. The house continued to be a “place to be invited” in the community with large backyard barbeques for their closest 100 family and friends.

The home remained in their family until 1994, when Bob and Jan Harbick purchased it and lovingly restored it and decorated it with lovely period antiques. They also built the 5th room, the Indian Summer Carriage Suite. They opened their home as a bed and breakfast in 1996 and shared its elegance and charm with their guests for 20 years before retiring in early 2016.

Since 2016, the 4th owner of the home, Caroline Proulx, has continued the tradition of providing outstanding hospitality, sharing the beautiful home with historic charm with guests, and hearing guest stories. Come visit and make the Five SeaSuns your place for relaxation while you explore Olympic National Park and everything else that the Olympic Peninsula has to offer.

COVID 19 Safety Precautions

The safety of our guests and staff is our number 1 priority during the pandemic. As a result:

As of March 12, 2022, the Clallam County mask mandate requiring all people to wear face masks inside businesses has been lifted as the risk level has been downgraded from high to moderate. At the moderate level, masks are recommended but not required in indoor settings, especially if unvaccinated, or when the vaccinated status of others around you is unknown. Our team will continue to wear face masks in public areas indoors and will continue to practice social distancing.

We are staggering breakfast seating timings to ensure safe practices and are offering seatings in two locations as well as a “to go” breakfast option.
